Why We Put Charity On Top
Seriously, a child’s life-saving surgery, a person’s next nutritious meal, a dog’s rescue from a kill shelter should NOT rely on the outcome of some fancy gala or golf tournament. What if it rains? What if the right people with money don’t show up? What if the right people with money show up but don’t give – but they do have a good time! Then what?
We (Marchelle and Kathy) created Charity On Top because after 20+ years working in nonprofits, we know how hard it is for charities to raise money. Life-saving surgeries, meals, rescue animals—none of these should depend on whether a gala sells out or if it rains on golf-tournament day. Fundraising is unpredictable, and most nonprofits run lean while tackling enormous challenges.
So we asked: What if giving looked different?
Instead of more bath sets, candles, ties, and gifts we don’t need—or politely re-gift—we could give meaningful change.
That’s why we built Charity On Top. A charity gift card is a memorable, personal gift that stands out. You choose the amount, get an immediate tax-deductible receipt, and the person you give it to chooses the charity they care about. It’s thoughtful, customizable, and it supports the causes your friends and family love.
Our mission is simple: move as much money as possible to nonprofits—big, small, local, and national—without requiring them to spend more on fundraising events or staff. With over two million charities in good standing, every gift card becomes real support where it’s needed most.
Thank you for keeping charity at the top of what you do.

I received a card. How do I redeem it?
It’s easy! Here’s how:
- Go to the Redeem page and search for the charity you want to donate to, then press Continue.
- You will be asked to enter in your card number — then click Validate Code.
- Choose how much you want to give to each charity and you’re on your way!
Your donation goes directly to the charity you choose. Kindness, complete. 💌
Can I use my Charity On Top gift card at a store?
Nope! Charity On Top gift cards are all about charity! Some kind person made a donation and gave you the gift card so that you can pick which charity will receive the donation. Wow, that’s quite a gift! Redeem now
Do employers see which charities their employees choose?
Do you share or sell my information when I buy a card or when someone redeems a card?
No, under no circumstances will we share or sell your information with anyone. During the redemption process, the redeemer has the opportunity to decide if they want to share their own information with the charity, but that is entirely voluntary.
How do you guarantee your cards?
We guarantee you’ll be happy with your gift card. If you’re not, we’ll re-print and re-ship at our expense.
Are your Charity On Top physical cards 100% biodegradable?
We prefer to use 100% biodegradable cards. To ensure maximum image saturation and richness, UltraCard® Premium cards may be substituted.
How was Charity On Top started?
We come from charity and actually have a GREAT story! Click here to learn more about us!
Can I redeem my card for more than one charity?
Do you have two favorite charities? Well, you are in luck. Upon redemption of your card on our site, you will be asked to select one or two charitable beneficiaries. Your donation will then be divided evenly between the two organizations.
Can I choose different amounts for each charity when redeeming my gift card?
Our current redemption system allows you to select up to two charities, and the gift card value will be split evenly between them. This change ensures donations are processed smoothly and reach charities quickly.
Previously, redeemers could assign custom amounts to each charity. However, that approach often created very small leftover balances on cards, which slowed down accounting and delayed payouts to charities. The updated method ensures each selected charity receives its full share promptly and without complications.
If you have a specific use case that isn’t covered by this approach, our support team is always happy to help.
How frequently do charities get paid?
We really loved mailing checks on Fun(d)ay Mondays, but now every day is payday for charities! Charities can pop in anytime to claim their funds at charityontop.org/payments/welcome/. They can choose paperless ACH or a traditional check by mail. We will notify charities three times that we have funds for them to collect, making our best attempt each time, of course. Funds that remain unclaimed will be returned to Charity On Top’s general donation fund and marked as unclaimed.
How much do charities get paid?
We LOVE charities, and we can proudly say that to ensure charities get what they need to fulfill their missions, we have the LOWEST FEES! Charities receive the face value of the original gift card less a nominal percentage to cover our credit card processing, distribution and administrative fees. What’s that percentage, you ask? It does depend on a couple of things. When Charity On Top gift cards are purchased on our website or from us directly, donors have the opportunity to donate 3.75% extra so the charities receive 100% of the face value of the gift cards. About 98% of those donors do, which is nice! The extra is tax-deductible and appreciated. If they do not, then we hold onto that 3.75% and the charities receive 96.25% of the face value of the gift cards. When the gift cards were distributed by a third or fourth party (like Amazon, Fetch or Starfish), each party holds onto a percentage and we send 85% of the face value of the gift cards to the chosen charities, even if it leaves us with a tiny bit or nothing. Getting as much as possible to the charities is the point!
Do Charity On Top cards expire?
No, they never expire. We WANT people to redeem their gift cards so charities can get more of their good work done. If you buy a digital card, we will send you a reminder periodically to nudge your recipient to redeem their card if it has sat in their back pocket too long. If you buy our physical cards, we recommend keeping a written list of the people you send the cards to and the corresponding numbers on the back of the cards.
I received a check from you! What is this for? Can you tell me who this is from?
Here at Charity On top, we sell charitable giving gift cards, where the gift card redeemers can choose from any of the 2.1 million charities in the IRS database to disburse their funds to. Someone chose your charity, yay!
When a gift card redeemer chooses a charity to disburse the funds to, they are not required to provide their name, email or note to the charity, so very often, the disbursements are anonymous to both us and the charities who received the funds. If your check does not have the gift card redeemers information, this means we do not have that information either, you can just enjoy this anonymous disbursement!
I received a check from you, but it looks like you don't normally send checks. Why did I receive this?

Do we (the charity) need to register on your website or do anything before depositing the check we received?
If you’ve recently received a check from us, no need to worry about embarking on a registration journey. You can deposit that check without any fuss.
However, if you’ve received a postcard from us announcing our new charity payments portal, it’s a different story. To start receiving payments on our website, you’ll need to register here on our website to get that rolling.
How do I know if the charity is in good standing?
Our list of 2 million charities is updated each week and only reflects those organizations in good standing with the IRS.
How do charities qualify to be included?
All charities are included! If an organization qualifies to be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and maintains its good standing, it’s part of the Charity On Top family. At the moment it’s 2 million charities. That’s a big family!
Who gets the tax deduction?
When you buy a Charity On Top gift card you are making a donation to Charity On Top Foundation, so we will send you a tax-deductible receipt and a big thank you!
Why don't you have a list of featured charities?
One of our main philosophies of Charity On Top is to create an equal and level playing field for all charities and that is why we don’t have featured charities or list our personal favorites. EVERY charity in good standing deserves to have a chance at your support. And the smallest of charities can be working just as hard as larger ones, so we decided we need to support them all! So happy charity shopping. We KNOW you will find one charity…or 1,999,999 of them to love!
Does the person redeeming the gift card receive a receipt?
No, the IRS will only allow us to provide tax-deductible receipts to the buyer of the gift cards. If you need proof that you redeemed your gift card, we encourage you to take a screen shot of the final redemption screen and save it as a JPEG. If you forgot to grab proof, chat with us and have the gift card # handy, and we can send along a proof of redemption.

Why Our Tax Return Revenue Appears Low
At Charity On Top, transparency matters. You may notice that our tax return shows relatively low revenue — and that’s by design.
When someone purchases a Charity On Top gift card, those funds don’t belong to us. We treat all gift card purchases as liabilities, similar to donor-advised funds, because the money is being held strictly on behalf of the charities that will ultimately receive the donation.
That means we do not record gift card sales as revenue. Instead, we safeguard those funds and then distribute them directly to the nonprofit organizations selected by our cardholders.
This accounting approach ensures accuracy, integrity, and full alignment with IRS guidelines and recommended protocol by all CPA’s and auditors. It also reflects our core mission: keeping the focus — and the funds — on supporting as many charities as possible, not on boosting our own bottom line.
