10 reasons to a Give Charity On Top gift card

10 reasons to a Give Charity On Top gift card

It’s that time of the year, the great holiday rush! It seems in this last month of the year we all have more to do than we can possibly get done. The decorating, the cooking, the gathering, the gifting! So much to do, and so little time. Charity On Top would love to help with your decorating, cooking, and gathering, but unfortunately our team of elves just can’t get to everyone in time. What Charity On Top can do is simplify, customize and “wow-ify”, your holiday gift giving.

At Charity On Top we specialize in charity gift cards to make sure you and your recipient will have the very best experience. With our extensive range of card designs and our truly personalized customer service, we know we can make your holidays better. There is nothing better than the feeling you have when giving a meaningful gift! When you give a Charity On Top gift card your recipient also gets that “giving high” when they choose a charity to direct their gift card towards.

We think giving a Charity On Top gift card is a pretty special gift! Here are 10 reasons (of the many reasons) why you should give Charity On Top Gift Cards this year:

  • ★ You can shop without leaving home. What is better than crossing multiple people off your list after just a few minutes online?
  • ★ They give the recipient the ability to support a charity that is special to them. With thousands of charities to choose from your recipient can choose a cause that is important to them.
  • ★ They save time! Charity On Top gift cards can be emailed with a personal note saving you hours of time. If you choose physical cards we can send them to you and they can easily be slipped into a personalized card, removing the burden of wrapping gifts. Or we can mail them with a personal note directly to the folks on your list!
  • ★ They work for every occasion
    • Work party
    • Stocking stuffers
    • Hannukah gifts
    • Kwanza gifts
    • New Year’s gifts
    • White Elephant party
    • Hostess gift
    • Coworker gifts
    • Unexpected guests
    • And so much more
  • ★ The recipient will feel really good about redeeming their COT gift card. It's a proven fact that giving to charity releases endorphins and lifts your spirits. A nice boost during the holiday season.
  • ★ Charity On Top gift cards are easy to personalize. With our extensive collection of both virtual and physical card designs you can find one that is perfect for your recipient. Or give us a photo, logo or custom design of your own!
  • ★ Charity On Top gift cards are eco-friendly. There is no wrapping paper required and no unwanted packaging. Plus you are reducing landfills by not giving cheaply made and unwanted gifts.
  • ★ They don’t need to be returned. A Charity On Top gift card is never the wrong size, and since your recipient chooses the charity they wish to support it is always a meaningful gift.
  • ★ Charity On Top gift cards are easy to give in-person or virtually! There are no mailing costs if you email them to your recipient. And if plans change, due to illness or otherwise, its easy to still get physical cards to the intended recipient as you can just pop them in the mail.
  • ★ Your purchase is tax-deductible! Did you know when you purchase Charity On Top gift cards you get the tax deduction? That comes in handy as we are quickly approaching tax season.

Happy Shopping! We look forward to seeing you on our website soon! charityontop.org

Diversify your holiday giving with Charity On Top gift cards!

Diversify your holiday giving with Charity On Top gift cards!

The holidays are quickly approaching and so is the push to find just the right gift for everyone on your list. We’ve been saying for years now that Charity On Top gift cards are a great way to simplify your holiday giving, but did you know Charity On Top can also help your gift giving be more inclusive? (Hint: We totally can!)

The end of the year is a traditional time for gift-giving and acknowledging those who have played an important role in our lives during the year. It is a time to celebrate and honor our loved ones, friends, co-workers, and those who make our lives easier day in and day out. Often this spirit of giving is tied to the Christmas holiday and to a lesser extent Hanukkah. For those who celebrate these holidays gift giving is a joyful way to honor their rituals and traditions. But what about other traditions and rituals that may be important to individuals who do not celebrate Christmas or Hanukkah?

Expanding our definition of the giving season and including more traditions is a way to honor and celebrate an array of other fall and winter rituals. Taking the time to think about others and how they celebrate really captures the spirit of the season and is a generous and inclusive way to give.

Even if you aren’t sure of someone’s holiday traditions it is always thoughtful to give a gift that allows them to incorporate their chosen traditions. Recognizing the many traditions we celebrate as a community not only makes for nicer more thoughtful gifts, but it also exposes you to new ideas, ways of thinking, and potential new traditions to incorporate into your holiday celebrations.

With Charity On Top gift cards you can select a card that is representative of any number of holidays from Diwali, Kwanza, Chinese New Year, St. Nicholas Day, New Year’s Eve, Los Posadas, Dia De Los Muertos... you get the idea. Even better, Charity On Top gift cards allow the recipient to choose what nonprofit they wish to support, and they can choose to support an organization that is significant to them. If you aren’t sure if someone celebrates a particular holiday Charity On Top has many designs to choose from that allow you to be festive while not indicating a particular holiday.

For example, if the recipient wants to support Diwali activities, they may choose to direct their Charity On Top gift card to Hum Sub (https://humsub.org). If they want to support Kwanzaa they may direct their Charity On Top gift card to the National Museum of African America History & Culture (https://nmaahc.si.edu/kwanzaa). Or they may choose to support The Marigold Project (https://the-marigold-project.org) and their Day of the Dead Festival Alters (https://www.dayofthedeadsf.org) The possibilities are endless!

A Charity On Top gift card is the perfect way to bring some inclusivity into your gift-giving! All of us at Charity On Top wish you a happy, healthy, and inclusive holiday season!

Holiday Gifting Plan

Holiday Gifting Plan

Hard to believe but there are only 91 days until Christmas, and 84 days until Hanukkah! Whatever holiday you celebrate, the gift giving season is almost upon us! At Charity On Top, we think about gift giving and holiday gifts all year long! We are ready to make this your best holiday season yet! How great will you feel to have your gift giving taken care of including those hard to shop for people? We find that having a gifting plan makes the holidays less stressful and more enjoyable, something we can all use!

We have a few tips to share to make your holiday shopping enjoyable and meaningful! With less than three months before peak gift exchanging season we are happy to share our gifting strategy. First, we make a list with several key categories - family, friends, acquaintances, and business. These are fairly obvious categories, but we have found the acquaintance one to be especially important to give a little extra thought so as to be prepared for all possible gifting situations. Who gave you a gift in the last couple of years that you weren't expecting and didn't have anything to reciprocate? Who are the service providers that help keep your family going? Teachers, groups you are a part of, cleaning people, gardeners, handy people, etc. All of these folks should be on that acquaintance list.

Once you have people updated in each category you can start to group them by gift levels which will align fairly closely with your categories. If they don’t it’s a good indicator to move someone to a new category. The categories we use - unique/special, generous, thoughtful and personal, and casual. This is when we also look at our overall holiday budget and allocate out our gift giving dollars to make sure we can stay within our budget and have gifts for everyone on our list.

Obviously the unique and special gifts will take a little time and effort to curate and often need more time to be ordered and arrive and those are the ones we like to start with in early October. Once that is done, we look for bulk gifting opportunities that can cover a significant chunk of our list. Sometimes we will plan to craft or bake items and this often works best when we plan in advance! These homemade items are a great personal gift. For these items we like to schedule time on our calendar to make them in November or early December and have a plan to have all the needed supplies on hand, thus reducing the stress of last minute creating. Of course we also like to add a Charity On Top gift card to these gifts to make them even more special (but really adding a Charity On Top Gift Card makes all gifts more special!) Then we spend late October and Early November filling in the rest of our lists and getting everything organized.

Charity On Top gift cards are also a great stand-alone gift, and another way to simplify your gift giving. You purchase the card and then recipient can choose a charity they want to support. So with minimal time on your end, you are able to give a personal and thoughtful gift. If you purchase Charity On Top gift cards you also benefit from knowing you are doing good and supporting charities that are helping those in need.

Looking over your list, if there are business associates or even family members or acquaintances that you aren’t sure what to buy them, Charity On Top can help! We specialize in bulk orders and taking the stress out of the process! We can even help with personalized custom cards, and simplified delivery options.

Trust us when we say taking a little time now to get your gifting planned will make for a happier and more enjoyable holiday where you can focus on spending time with the people you love and not running around last minute looking for gifts. We are here to help make this a stress-free and enjoyable holiday season with gifts you can feel good about giving!

Gimme Shelter!

Gimme Shelter!

At Charity On Top giving is what we love, what we do, and what we hope we are inspiring others to do as well. Late last year we had an amazing opportunity to put our money where our hearts are and sponsor a tiny home in the new Arroyo Seco Tiny House Village.

Charity On Top has been supporting the unhoused in our community for some time, including putting on the World's Big Sleep Out in 2019. Through the South Pasadena Rotary, where Kathy and Marchelle (Charity On Top Co-Founders) are both members, we recently did some work at an encampment in the Arroyo, a local area where unhoused community members often set up camp. We distributed toiletry kits, served hot meals, and even operated a pop-up store of donated items. Kathy, Charity On Top Executive Director shares "It was a gratifying experience for me to serve and to get to know some of our unhoused neighbors."

When Marchelle heard that Charity On Top could sponsor a tiny home we jumped at the opportunity. The Arroyo Seco Tiny Home Village opened in late 2021 on a sliver of the Arroyo Seco Park on the north side of 110 freeway near Avenue 60 in Los Angeles. We are happy to say it has been a needed and welcome addition to our community.

According to the builders, Pallet Shelter, each tiny home measures eight feet by eight feet and has a locking door, four windows with screens, heating, cooling, and electricity, as well as a fire extinguisher, smoke detector, and carbon monoxide monitor. They each have storage and a folding bed that can be doubled up into a bunk and stowed away when not in use. The village also has hygiene trailers, laundry facilities, water bottle filling stations, and seating for dining. The area is well lit and has 24-hour security just to make sure everyone is safe.

These tiny homes are meant to be transitional housing where the residents will stay for four to six months while working with social workers and other service providers to secure permanent housing. Couples are allowed to stay together, and pets are welcome, making these tiny houses a true home for the residents.

Charity On Top was recently able to tour the tiny home village and speak with some residents. We met the woman living in the Charity On Top home, and she was so appreciative and grateful for the opportunity to transition into permanent housing. She is living in the Charity On Top home while working on securing her section 8 housing voucher and building a sustainable future. Kathy also saw a familiar face - a woman she had met previously while volunteering at the Arroyo encampment! Kathy shares "To see that she is no longer houseless and is safe and healthy is truly a gift to us! Charity On Top is thrilled to be a small part of the team supporting these residents as they do the work to transform their lives. I hope we can inspire others to do the same."

At Charity On Top, we celebrate the power of doing good!

At Charity On Top, we like to think we are awesome! Really, we wouldn't do what we do if we didn't think it was needed, useful, and fun. Our donors have come to rely on us for a unique and customizable gift giving solution and we do our very best to make it an amazing experience from start to finish.

As we say on our website, our gift cards are not just another present, they are a gift for the future! In case you haven't heard, we create unique and custom gift cards that only benefit charities! You load the card, you get the tax deduction, and you give the card. Your recipient chooses the charity they love from over 1.9 million available on our site, so they are sure to find their favorite!

But don't take our word for it, lots of people love Charity On Top. Our amazing donors and how they feel about Charity On Top and our Charity On Top gift cards are really our reason “Why”. They make us happy to do what we do. Here are just a few reviews that we are super grateful for, and we wanted to share with you!

“To give is better than to receive, and with Charity On Top, it happens three times. You get to give a gift card to someone, then they in turn get to give to their favorite charity, and then that organization gives back to the community. Wow, what a great way to make the world better by giving!” - Bruce

“Terrific charity makes gift giving easy. You purchase a gift card, give it as a gift. The recipient chooses the charity that they like. And everybody feels good. A wonderful way to celebrate an occasion. Oh, did I mention that the customer service is terrific, and you can personalize the gift cards with any image you like.” - Shellmiles

“I received a Charity On Top gift card. I had never gotten one before. It was awesome. What a great idea. I didn't know a charity card like this was out there. I really liked choosing my own charity. I do recommend it.” - GJ Blue

“Love this nonprofit. They provide a service to help other charities by purchasing their gift cards. The recipient of your gift gets to pick the charity they want to donate to. Perfect for the person that has everything. They are very quick in getting the gift cards to you. One of my favorite nonprofits.” - Denise Kasper S.

It means so much to us that our donors appreciate what we do! If you are one of our amazing donors, thank you, you are the best! If you are about to be a donor, we can't wait for pop your cherry! If you haven't taken the time to looks at our website, we hope you will. You will be able to see how many charities are being supported each week, and how much fun it is to put Charity On Top!

Honors & Celebrates Juneteenth

Juneteenth is our newest federal holiday. It is a time to celebrate and reflect on shared history and tradition. The Holiday acknowledges the day in 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas. He informed the enslaved African Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended! What will you do to celebrate Juneteenth?

Marsha P. Johnson

Marsha P. Johnson was an American gay liberation activist and self-identified drag queen. Known as an outspoken advocate for gay rights, Johnson was one of the prominent figures in the Stonewall uprising of 1969. This pride month Charity On Top is highlighting the Marsha P. Johnson Institute and its work to support the Black Trans Community.

Happy Pride Month

June is Pride Month, when we all come together to celebrate individuals for who they are, and to champion LGBTQ+ rights. It is a time to acknowledge the work, struggles, and sacrifice of previous generations who have helped us get to where we are today. It is a chance for allies to show their support, and to further educate themselves. As President Obama states "When all Americans are treated as equal, no matter who they are or whom they love, we are all freer."

Americans celebrate that freedom in Pride gatherings across the country that are rooted in the tumultuous history of minority groups who have struggled for decades to overcome prejudice and be accepted for who they are. The original organizers chose this month to pay homage to the Stonewall uprising that took place in June 1969 in New York City. The riots at the Stonewall Inn spurred the modern gay rights movement.

On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York's Greenwich Village, and began forcibly arresting patrons. In response to the police brutality at Stonewall, New York's gay community rioted for the next three days. The protests became a catalyst for an emerging gay rights movement and annual celebrations. The riots also gave birth to organizations such as the Gay Liberation Front and the Gay Activists Alliance. In 2016 the area around the Stonewall Inn was designated a national monument.

While we all love a parade and a party, Pride Month is about more than just that! It is a great time to pledge to support the LGBTQ+ community. We have a few simple suggestions with ways you can show your support:

  • Learn about the work LGBTQ+ organizations are doing.
  • Educate yourself about the history of Stonewall and the Pride Movement.
  • Volunteer and donate to LGBTQ+ Organizations.

There are so many organizations doing important work to promote LGBTQ+ rights. We encourage you to look for local ones in your area. Here are a few National and Local organizations we love at Charity On Top:

Los Angeles Organizations:

National Organizations:

At Charity On Top, we are waving our rainbow flags and marching at various Pride events this month. We hope to see you out there! In closing, we would like to share this quote from Elliot Page as we think it sums up what Pride Month is all about. "We deserve to experience love fully, equally, without shame, and without compromise."

MAY 2022

Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health Awareness Month began in the United States in 1949 and was started by the Mental Health America (MHA) organization. Since then, it has been celebrated in May each year as a way to bring awareness to the importance of Mental Health for our overall well-being. This year the theme is “Back to Basics” which is meant to shine a light on foundational knowledge about mental health.

At Charity On Top we celebrate Mental Health Awareness month and want to do our part to raise awareness about this important topic. We know it is essential to take time for mental health! At Charity On Top we speak openly about mental health and wellness and encourage our team to make their mental health a priority. We are pleased to see more and more celebs speaking out about their own mental health and helping to normalize the conversation. In the past few years, Kirsten Bell, Selena Gomez, Jonathan Van Ness, and Pete Davidson to name a few have spoken up about their own mental health journeys. You can read about them here: https://people.com/health/stars-who-have-mental-illnesses-mental-health-issues/

There are also many amazing nonprofits who are working to improve mental health services for us all. If you would like to know more, and “get back to basics” around mental health we encourage you to check out:

https://www.nami.org/, https://jedfoundation.org/, https://bornthisway.foundation/, https://www.thenationalcouncil.org/

or any of the local charities in your area that are supporting mental health in your community.

As with so many other things, COVID has made the mental health crisis in this country worse than ever. More people are isolated, facing depression, or not able to access the services they need. This is further complicated by a shortage of qualified mental health care providers as many have left the field, and during the pandemic fewer people were training for mental health careers. While this may sound a bit grim, we can each do our part to change things for the better. If we each do a little, it will go a long way.

We encourage you to commit to doing just one thing from this list this month to help improve mental health in your community:

  • Write to your elected officials and encourage them to support legislation to improve mental health services. A list of active legislation can be found here, https://www.thenationalcouncil.org/get-involved/be-an-advocate/write-your-legislator
  • Learn about and consider a politician's position on mental health and wellness when you vote for them
  • Share your mental health story with a group or organization where it will help others
  • Allot 15 minutes at work or school to do something kind for those in your office/class.
  • Take time to care for yourself whether that be connecting with others, learning new skills, being physically active, practicing mindfulness, or taking time to do something nice for others.
  • Donate to or volunteer for a mental health or wellness organization

APRIL 2022

National Volunteer Month

National Volunteer Month

April is National Volunteer Month

In the United States, April is National Volunteer Month—a month dedicated to recognizing the importance of volunteering and honoring the significant contributions individuals and groups make by donating their time to help organizations and individuals in their communities. Did you know that Utah is the most active volunteer state with over 51% of its population volunteering at some point during the year? Go Utahns! California, where we are, is ranked 47th with only 25% of the population volunteering annually. Come on, Californians! Whatever state you're in, we encourage you to become a volunteer yourself if it is something you haven't yet had the chance to experience.

At Charity On Top, we are so excited to shine a light on all the good that is accomplished by volunteers. In the US, approximately 25% of the adult population volunteers at least once a year. This amounts to over $193 billion of time being donated! Individuals ages 35-54 are most likely to volunteer, but volunteering is a wonderful activity for all ages. As Dr. Seuss wisely said “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not.” We want to say a heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers out there. Because of you, things are getting better, and the world is indeed a better place.

April 17-23 is National Volunteer Week. This week has been celebrated in the United States since 1974 and has continued to grow each year. There are thousands of volunteer projects and special events scheduled throughout the week across the country. The National Points of Light organization has a database of virtual and in-person volunteer opportunities. If you are looking for ways to volunteer it is a great place to start. https://engage.pointsoflight.org We encourage you to also check out the many local organizations around you doing amazing work. If you are still looking for opportunities consider reaching out to your local:

  • Food Banks
  • Rotary Clubs
  • Animal Shelters
  • Libraries
  • Senior Centers

When you volunteer you provide direct support to those in need, but did you know volunteering also has many benefits for those who volunteer? Volunteering is a great way to meet friends and learn new skills. It can even help with career prospects. Studies show that volunteers have increased happiness and a better outlook on the future than those that do not volunteer. Volunteering enables you to help others and improve your overall well-being at the same time — it doesn't get any sweeter than that!

FEBRUARY 2022

Black History Month

Black History Month

Every year during February, we celebrate Black History Month, a time to recognize the role black people have played through American history and honor their achievements, triumphs, and accomplishments that have been too long ignored.

Black History Month was originally started in 1926 as a week-long endeavor instead of a month by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (a nonprofit you can still donate to using Charity On Top gift cards). By the 1960s, the week had grown to be recognized by local mayors and governors located all over the United States. Finally, it developed into an entire month and was made official in 1976 by President Gerald Ford. The celebration of Black History Month has even been adopted in a few other countries globally, including The United Kingdom and Canada.

There are many ways to get involved in Black History Month and celebrate. This year's theme is black health and wellness, a topic that is often both overlooked and underfunded. There are tons of great charities where you can donate time or money to help bridge this gap of knowledge and funding, many of which you can find on our website. You could also show support by supporting local, statewide, national, or global black-owned restaurants and businesses, raising awareness for issues black communities face, or listening to and amplifying black voices.

If you want to donate for Black History Month, Charity On Top is a great place to start your journey. Buy a charity gift card today that you or your recipient can use at over 1.9 million nonprofit organizations. It is simple and a great way to contribute to the appreciation and recognition of oft-forgotten and underserved communities. Thank you for putting Charity On Top.

Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day

It's that time of year again when love is in the air as we celebrate Valentine's Day on February 14th! We at Charity On Top wanted to share a few things that we LOVE and help you think of some sweet ideas to share what you love!

We LOVE What We Do:

It may sound too sweet, but our mission is something that we love being a part of. Our co-founders, Marchelle and Kathy, have dedicated so much of their time and lives to giving back, appreciating charity, and making a real difference in the world. We are passionate about bringing forward a new way to donate, fundraise, and spread kindness and love.

We LOVE Our People:

Every person who has ever bought from our store, donated to our cause, worked with us, spread our name, or even visited our website is on the list of whom we want to send love to this Valentine's Day. We could have never gotten to where we are without the support our customers and partners give us, and we are so thankful for how much they have allowed us to fulfill our mission and the missions of all the charities we send money to.

We LOVE Love:

A considerable part of what we do stems from the love we as Charity On Top have for what we do and the love we as people have for each other. Without love, whether it be familial, romantic, friendly, or any form you can think of, our process of giving and donating would not be possible. Love and compassion drive people to donate and help each other in times of need. We love that LOVE plays such a massive role in the community and culture we are a part of, and we wouldn't have it any other way.

Share What You LOVE:

If you are or know someone who loves charity and helping as much as we do, consider sending a Charity On Top gift card as a sweet alternative to chocolate or flowers this year! Our gift cards are a fun, thoughtful, and easy way to share how much you love someone. You choose the amount to give, and then your recipient gets to pick a charity THEY love from our 1.9 million options. Visit our site HERE to shop for gift cards and spread some love today! Happy Valentine's Day, and thank you for putting Charity On Top.

A Look Back at 2021, and A Look Forward at 2022

A Look Back at 2021, and A Look Forward at 2022

As we celebrate moving out of 2021 and welcome 2022 and whatever it will bring, come with us as we highlight some of our sweetest moments and accomplishments, and give you a taste of what the future will bring us!

— Live Redemptions and Fun(d)ay Monday!

We added two notable features to our website and business in 2021, our live redemption page and Fun(d)ay Monday. Both are incredible assets to the experience you get when choosing Charity On Top, as you can see your donation go live and know exactly when your charity is getting paid. In addition, fun(d)ay Monday, which is the payment of charities every Monday, puts us far ahead of any competition, most of whom pay their charities less than monthly!

— Unwrapit!

In time for the 2021 holiday season, we partnered with Unwrapit to make our gift cards better than ever. The Unwrapit experience is available as an add-on when sending bulk digital and physical Charity On Top gift cards that adds engagement and fun. With Unwrapit, recipients receive a personalized interactive digital reveal complete with a to/from card, a choice of where to donate (curated by you, if you like) along with the custom gift card. View an example at bit.ly/unwrapitexperience!

— Third-Party Platforms and Retailers!

We grew so much in 2021, and one huge way was through third-party platforms such as Fetch, Neocurrency, and many super cool rewards and wellness apps! Our sales on such platforms skyrocketed this year. We are now available online at Walmart, Amazon and Costco, three of the largest and most prominent retailers in the United States.

— Sundae School!

After years of wanting one, we finally launched our very own blog in October 2021, which is what you are reading this recap on! We are so excited to continue to give you insight into the world of nonprofits, gift cards, and our little niche of where they overlap! So continue to check back the third Sunday of each month for some new content.

— New Logo!

We launched a brand new Charity On Top logo this past year, which we love. We worked hard to incorporate everything we stand for and keep our signature sweet twist. What we landed on was a cherry, but with its stem twisted into the ribbon imagery often associated with charitable causes. We think it is the perfect combination of who we are and what we do, and we hope you agree!

— A Year of Redemptions!

We redeemed almost 1 million dollars through our charity gift cards throughout the last year, our highest number yet. We had over 2,300 redemptions and over $110,000 raised in just December alone.

We want to thank every single person who helped us throughout the year. Whether you worked with us, gave a gift card, redeemed one, or even just mentioned us to someone else, you are part of how we achieved all these accomplishments in 2021.

Looking Forward:

We had a great year in 2021 and are determined to be even better in 2022. This upcoming year you can expect even more growth from us as we are added to several new third-party gift card distributors. We are also in the middle of a HUGE project - a new platform to make donations and giving much more convenient. Watch for this to launch later this year! Finally, we are working hard to break out and start providing our list of nonprofits from our own database, received directly from the IRS! This will streamline choosing a charity when redeeming a gift card, making a Direct Donation or using our new upcoming platform. We are so excited about everything we will do this year and cannot wait for more opportunities to put Charity On Top with you!

When you're searching for a cause to support, you want your donation to make an impact. With over one million charities in the United States, and maybe that many scammers, you must ask questions and stay vigilant to avoid being potentially tricked by a fake charity during your search. To help your journey to donate, we've created some tips below!

Where to start? Google it!

Online research is a great place to begin finding the right charity, but when you think you found the one, be sure to search their name followed by keywords such as "review," "rating," or even "scam." If the charity is legitimate, more than one resource will document it. A simple sign of validity is if the nonprofit's website ends in .org rather than .com. However, keep in mind anyone can purchase a domain and make it look like a charity, so this method isn't always foolproof.

Official documentation? You've got it!

A nonprofit organization must be registered with the federal government to be categorized as a 501(c)(3). IRS.gov provides a handy tool called the Tax Exempt Organization Search to determine if the donations made to an organization are tax-deductible charitable contributions. The site also includes information about a nonprofit's federal tax status and filings. Another critical thing to note about this tool is that you can search using a charity's name or an Employer Identification Number (EIN). Every organization has an EIN, so you shouldn't hesitate to ask for this if you can't find them by name. The only times a nonprofit should not have an EIN is if they're newly formed and have not filed a tax Form 990 yet or are under the fiscal umbrella of a parent nonprofit, like a program of a larger organization.

Still have unanswered questions?

Every charity should have some point of contact, whether a phone number or email address. If they're only starting and don't have an online history, you can ask them directly about their mission, goals, and how they will meet them with your donation. If they claim to be established for some time, you can ask them their history of success. If they struggle to answer your questions, it is likely you are in the process of being scammed and should consider donating to a different organization.

When you have over a million charities to choose from, the charitable nonprofit of your interest should take the time to answer your questions to build a relationship with you thoroughly. Just as you value their mission, they should also value your interest in contributing. If they can't answer your questions, they may not be real or may not be as trustworthy as you think.

So they're real, but how good are they?

If you feel the charity's website may be dishonest or just want to double-check, there are multiple organizations that work to combat scammers and validate charities. Websites that provide ratings and reviews and also their public tax returns (called a 990 form) include:

Things to watch for:

  • Charity scammers often use names very similar to those of real, popular charities. So just searching their name online will save you from this scam!
  • Pay attention to how the organization is asking you to pay. For example, one common scam is to ask for easily accessible gift cards from big retailers such as Target or Walmart. Legitimate charities will never pressure you to donate by gift card or even with cash or by wiring money.
  • Scammers will answer your questions with vague sentiments and try to send you in a loop, avoiding saying how they will use your donation.
  • Are they rushing you into donating? They may have ulterior motives if they aren't thoroughly explaining the cause before asking for money.
  • Are you feeling pressured to donate? If you're being thanked for a donation you never made, they're attempting to trick you into paying. If it's someone you've never spoken to or an organization you've never heard of, it's a scam!

Finally:

To guarantee your donation is being used well by an actual charity, Charity On Top does all the work for you. Our gift cards and Direct Donation allow you to browse from 1.9 million charities, and our secure checkout process is only a few simple steps. We make it convenient to donate to a cause you care about, and you can share the experience with your loved ones by gifting them one of our gift cards! Thank you for putting Charity On Top!

GivingTuesday

GivingTuesday: What, Why, and How?

Nestled in the aftermath of Thanksgiving and before the start of the winter holiday season is GivingTuesday, a movement dedicated to generosity, well doing, and most importantly giving. Named to match with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the Tuesday immediately following Thanksgiving promotes spending in a way many don't consider during the holiday season, through donations and charitable giving.

WHAT

Starting in 2012, GivingTuesday began much like many other charitable causes, with the idea that kindness and generosity are mighty and can help change lives worldwide. What started as a way to effect change during what has become a season of incredible commercialization in the United States now can be seen in over 70 countries, some of which do not even participate in Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Initially, the idea was just some marketing material and a hashtag that anyone could use, but as it grew, GivingTuesday officially became a nonprofit organization in 2019. All the proceeds raised by GivingTuesday, the organization, are given directly to charities and nonprofits. Still, they also encourage giving and generosity through any means and to any organization one might prefer.

WHY

The winter holiday season seems to kick off on Black Friday, immediately followed by Cyber Monday, both days when a large amount of money is spent all over the country. Small Business Saturday, though lesser-known, was also created within this weekend, creating a perfect storm of sales to encourage customers to purchase. Businesses boom with sales as people rush to buy items necessary and unnecessary, as gifts or for themselves. In 2020 consumers in the United States alone spent approximately 9 billion dollars on Black Friday and an additional 10 billion dollars on Cyber Monday. With so much spending in one week, it doesn't seem absurd to consider spending on something bigger than ourselves. The holidays are also when many look at what they have and appreciate how fortunate they may be. It might sound cheesy, but when fall winds down, and it slowly turns to winter, people all over become sentimental. This idea is solidified in classic holiday movies such as A Christmas Carol, or It's A Wonderful Life. GivingTuesday is strategically placed during a time when many feel connected but do not often take the time to donate and give to those in need. People may think of ways to appreciate their friends and family, but charities and nonprofit organizations that can help all over the globe are largely ignored. The idea of GivingTuesday and the day it was chosen to take place allow people worldwide to examine charitable giving in a new light and encourage them to take part. Some even consider GivingTuesday a way to combat the rampant consumerism that has grown throughout recent years and a great way to keep the true spirit of the season alive.

HOW

Just like Charity On Top, GivingTuesday will not try to influence you to donate your time or money to any charity or cause specifically. The most important thing to them is inspiring and fostering something they call "radical generosity," which they define as the concept that the suffering of others should be as intolerable to us as our own suffering. Anyone and everyone can and should participate in GivingTuesday.

Some examples of what you can do:

  • Advise someone who needs it
  • Compliment a stranger
  • Reach out to a friend or family member you haven't seen recently
  • Lend your voice to a cause you care about
  • Volunteer your time
  • Donate to a nonprofit of your choice

Honoring Veterans Day

Honoring Veterans Day

Every year on November 11th, we take time to honor and thank our veterans, who bravely served our country to protect and ensure our freedoms. We stand united to support those who have put their lives on the line for the United States of America and show our deep respect for them.

When first celebrated, Veterans Day was called Armistice Day and commemorated World War I. Originated on November 11th due to it being the eleventh day of the eleventh month, Armistice Day became a federal holiday in 1938. In 1954, it was officially changed from Armistice to Veterans Day to include soldiers from World War II, Korean War, and all wars moving forward.

Use today to reflect on what veterans and their service mean and take some time to show your support. If you know any veterans, make sure to reach out and not only thank them for their service, but make sure they know they are supported, respected, and loved no matter what they have been through. Send a care package to a soldier overseas, attend an event commemorating what veterans have done, or raise some money for veterans' homes. This Veterans Day, take action directly helping veterans through mental, physical, and monetary issues by donating time, money, clothing, and food.

If you would like to give the gift of helping our veterans to someone else in your life, or give a veteran something special today, check out Charity On Top, where our gift cards can be redeemed for over 1.9 million charities. Ordering is simple, and you'll love knowing you helped make a difference in someone's life. Thank you for putting Charity On Top!

OCTOBER 2021

5 Years of Putting Charity On Top

Welcome to the Sundae School: Our Charity On Top Blog!

We at Charity On Top are celebrating our 5th anniversary with our newest feature, The Sundae School Blog! We are ecstatic! Welcome to our sweet center for all things giving, kindness, and of course, Charity On Top.

After twenty plus years of working with nonprofit organizations, and even longer separately, our co-founders Marchelle Sellers and Kathy Selders were becoming increasingly frustrated with the limited resources nonprofits had for fundraising. They put on beautiful galas, fun golf tournaments, and wrote compelling grant requests galore. With so much hard work and planning, there is only so much an organization could control. The outcomes felt precarious when compared to the vital missions they were supporting. As Marchelle says, "Seriously, a child's life-saving surgery, a person's next nutritious meal, a dog's rescue from a kill shelter should NOT rely on the outcome of some fancy gala or golf tournament! What if it rains? What if the right people with money don't show up? What if the right people with money show up but don't give – but they do have a good time! Then what?" So they began asking, "What more is out there?" Out of their frustration, they began trying to solve the problem all charities had, a more reliable and effective solution to fundraising. They realized that pairing charitable giving and gift-giving could be powerful and that a charity gift card could be beneficial to all charities. Their solution: Charity On Top gift cards!

For the love of charity, Marchelle and Kathy launched Charity On Top together on October 23, 2016. Our goal is to push all kinds of money to all kinds of nonprofit organizations. Our gift cards support their belief in loving all charities the same, not just the big ones. When redeeming gift cards, supporters have the option to choose from 1.9 million charities, with the list being updated weekly, guaranteeing all charities are 501c3 nonprofit organizations and in good standing. Charity On Top evens the playing field for small, medium, and large charities, giving redeemers choices between local community nonprofits to national causes.

Charity On Top exists because of the struggles Marchelle and Kathy faced through their fundraising efforts on behalf of charitable nonprofit organizations. Now our organization can help streamline new types of money to all nonprofits through the power of gift-giving. We strongly believe that charity should be easy, fun, and top of mind, and over our last five years together we have worked to make sure that becomes reality for all who choose to use Charity On Top!

Here on the Sundae School posts can be expected every third Sunday of the month, educating our readers on all kinds of sweet stuff about the world of charitable giving. Keep your eyes peeled for our unscheduled bonus posts as well that will keep you updated on holidays big and small, company announcements, and other surprises! We welcome all nonprofits, companies, and customers to get to know a little more about us and the amazing gift-giving world we love to be a part of. We cannot hold back our excitement to share this new step with you, and thank you for putting Charity On Top!

Three Ways Nonprofits Affect You

Three Ways Nonprofits Affect You

Nonprofit organizations play a major role in almost everyone's lives, but it might be hard to see and understand how without occasionally looking a little deeper. Maybe you were born in a nonprofit hospital, maybe you attended a nonprofit school, or maybe you have enjoyed America's forests and open spaces, which are preserved and kept beautiful through the hard work of nonprofits. When thinking of a nonprofit, many only consider the most obvious parts of charity, but nonprofit organizations are always working, seen and unseen, to make daily life better and more enjoyable for all.

Charitable nonprofits help people with shared beliefs come together in meaningful ways that benefit others. They create and enact plans to bring our biggest dreams for noble causes alive, and are often the voice of the people they serve. To highlight some of the greatest impacts nonprofit organizations have on our lives, sometimes without our conscious knowledge, we created a list below!

Nonprofits Create Equitable and Thriving Communities
Many nonprofits assist in filling gaps in services that are underserved or de-prioritized by government and private businesses. With 1.9 million charitable organizations formed in America, there are a large range of causes, including advocacy, arts, culture, education, religion, environment, health, human services, and many more. Their work is vital, as they help to solve societal challenges others may not want to face. Local nonprofits especially impact the communities they serve by providing specific services that are needed, as they work with a deeper understanding of the community. With these nonprofits working diligently to make communities better, we step towards a better system that carries equality for all parties.

Nonprofits Lead People's Participation in Democracy
Nonprofits are placed at the front of our democracy in many ways and they are the voices of the otherwise unheard. Their work increases awareness of issues for the public and the government by keeping a close eye on laws, policies, and regulations they find important. They are often well-connected and knowledgeable in order to address government decision-makers, hold them accountable for their choices, and demand change when it is needed. As this voice, nonprofits work closely with political candidates and officials to give them a better understanding of their causes and how they can respond to their needs. Many nonprofits become advocates that speak up for good public policy, and their continued support helps to transform our democracy into a more universal space.

Nonprofits Help our Economy Flourish
Nonprofit organizations give in other ways than just their causes, as they are a large contributor to our economy. Over 1.9 million nonprofit organizations exist in America, making up about 10 percent of employment in the country. In 2016, nonprofits accounted for 5.6 percent of America's gross domestic product (GDP). In 2017, approximately 25.1 percent of adults volunteered, which is a rough estimate of 8.8 billion hours spent helping nonprofit organizations. Getting involved with a nonprofit organization that interests you not only helps their cause but also our economy!

Charity On Top Understands the Vital Role Nonprofits Play
Our organization was founded on the importance of all charitable nonprofits; we love all charities the same, and our mission is to simply put any Charity On Top. Charitable nonprofits are the heart of America, they make our communities, policies, and economy a better place for everyone to thrive. You have the ability to give the gift of giving, and support nonprofits through our website! Our gift cards work to create an even playing field for all charities, providing a list of all 1.8 charities registered as a 501(c)(3), check out our variety HERE!
